Open Loop Design

Each Open Loop system is individually designed, taking into account the amount of heat required for the building, the water volumes available from the source (either from boreholes or streams, rivers and estuaries), the method in which we can abstract the water and recharge, also the Ground Source Heat Pump system itself. We work closely with the Environment Agency to manage and understand the impact to licence/manage the impact on the water resource. We have been designing and installing open loop systems for over five years. These can be some of the most efficient renewable heating systems available and are suitable for residential and commercial properties.

Since 2008, Nicholls Boreholes & Ground Source have installed 500 ground source heat pump systems and have saved over 14,000 tonnes of CO2­­­­e* from being emitted into the atmosphere.

A 4-bedroom house with a floor area of 120m­­2 and a 24kW heat pump will save on average 93 Tonnes of CO2e* from being emitted over a 20 year period, which is the equivalent of taking 45 cars off the road.

*CO2e equivalent: A carbon dioxide equivalent or CO2 equivalent, abbreviated as CO2-eq is a metric measure used to compare the emissions from various greenhouse gases on the basis of their global-warming potential (GWP), by converting amounts of other gases to the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide with the same global warming potential.
